This restoration project features a Vintage Dooney & Bourke Buckle Zip Top Crossbody Bag, in Black All-Weather Leather with British Tan Trim, a piece that’s over three decades old but still has so much life left to offer. Here’s how we brought it back to life.

Step-by-Step Restoration: How to Clean & Restore a Vintage Dooney & Bourke Buckle Zip Top Crossbody Bag

Restoring a vintage bag requires patience, the right tools, and a gentle touch. We followed a detailed process to make sure this Vintage Dooney & Bourke Buckle Zip Top Crossbody Bag got the love it deserved. Here’s how we did it:

1. Vacuumed the Interior

The interior of a vintage bag can often accumulate dust, lint, and debris over time. Using a handheld cordless vacuum, we carefully cleaned the inside of the bag, paying special attention to the seams and corners. We also carefully vacuumed the interior slip pocket and the exterior slip pocket.

To learn more about the importance of using a handheld vacuum for your vintage and luxury bags, check out our article on Why Using a Handheld Cordless Vacuum is Essential for Cleaning Preloved Vintage and Luxury Bags.

2. Cleaned the Interior

We started by vacuuming the bag to remove loose dirt and debris. Then, using a WaterWipe, we gently wiped down the entire interior. This method helped ensure the inside was thoroughly cleaned without damaging the materials.

3. Cleaned the Exterior

Since this Vintage Dooney & Bourke Buckle Zip Top Crossbody Bag is crafted with All-Weather Leather (AWL) and accented with British tan leather trim, we used WaterWipes again to carefully clean the exterior, including the leather strap and trim. This step removed surface dirt and grime while being gentle on both the leather and brass hardware. Our goal was to clean the bag without compromising its original vintage charm.

4. Cleaned and Polished the Brass Hardware

Over time, brass hardware can lose its shine and become tarnished, and this bag was no exception. The brass on this bag was heavily tarnished and dull—a common issue for a bag that's over 30 years old. The bulk of our effort went into restoring the brass, as you'll see in the video.

To bring back its shine, we used our go-to brass cleaner: Brasso Brass Cleaner. Applying it with cotton swabs and a clean microfiber towel, we gently removed the tarnish. When using this cleaner, it's crucial to apply it in small amounts and reapply as necessary to carefully lift and remove the build-up, restoring the brass's natural shine.

5. Cleaned and Conditioned the Leather

All of the leather on this bag was extremely dry and needed both cleaning and reconditioning. We used our trusted two-in-one product, Apple Leather Conditioner, applied with a microfiber towel and cotton swabs to the entire exterior of the bag, the crossbody strap, the duck FOB holder, and the leather trim. This step was crucial in removing any additional debris and nourishing the leather.

Leather conditioners are vital for preventing cracking and maintaining leather’s suppleness, especially on vintage and luxury leather bags. The Apple Leather Conditioner works as both a cleaner and conditioner, making it our go-to product for all our preloved vintage and luxury leather bags.

To learn more about the importance of choosing the right leather cleaner and conditioner for your vintage and luxury leather bags, check out our article on How Apple Leather Conditioner Helps Us Give Preloved Vintage Leather Luxury Bags a Second Chance.

6. Buffed Out the Bag

Once everything was cleaned and conditioned, we used a clean microfiber towel to buff out the entire bag. This step really brought the look and feel of all the leather and brass back to life.

7.  Touched Up the Scuff Marks

After cleaning, conditioning, and buffing the British Tan Trim, we noticed a few scuffed areas that needed extra attention. To address this, we used our go-to leather polish, Kiwi Polish Paste, and gently applied it over the scuff marks with a microfiber towel to recolor them. This helped the scuffed areas blend more seamlessly with the rest of the trim while also adding extra nourishment to keep the leather looking its best.

8. Reassembled, Stuffed and Reshaped the Bag

Once we were satisfied with the bag, we reassembled it, rehung the adorable duck fob, and stuffed the bag with white tissue paper to help it retain its shape. As we stuffed the bag, we reshaped it, returning it to the proper shape. Keeping your vintage bags stuffed when not in use is crucial to ensuring the bag retains its original structure and functionality, especially after years of use.
